The Rev. Margaret Marquis has been the pastor of Ocoee Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since February of 2008. Pastor Margaret was ordained by First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Asheville, NC and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina in 2005. She earned the Master of Divinity degree at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, SC in 2005. Pastor Margaret’s experience in ministry includes a lifetime of involvement in churches, including serving in various capacities in music ministry (as organist, pianist and/or choir director/music minister) since her teen years. Prior to coming to Ocoee, she served as the Minister of Music and Youth at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Asheville, NC. The pastor is also a retired public school teacher with 34 years of experience, mostly as an English teacher in middle schools in the Owen District of Buncombe Country, NC. She also was one of the first 170 teachers in the nation to earn the title of National Board Certified Teacher (in 1995) through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. She holds a Master of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC) and has done extensive additional graduate study in English language arts, Latin, and educational theory. Pastor Margaret grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and Jacksonville University (BA in history). Through her paternal grandmother, she is a sixth generation Floridian with roots in Florida dating to the 1830s. In her free time, Pastor Margaret enjoys needlework (quilting, knitting, sewing, counted thread stitchery), reading (an eclectic mix of mysteries, history – fictional and non-fiction, biography, theology, cooking, and science), family history/genealogy, and playing with the miniature pinscher, Lady Blaze, that was a seminary graduation gift to both Bill and Margaret from his father, the Rev. Dr. William H. Marquis and his friend, Farrell Wilson. William (Bill) Marquis is the pastor’s husband. They have been married for nearly 40 years. He grew up in the mountains of North Carolina where his father was a Presbyterian minister. He is a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL and of Florida Junior College at Jacksonville (now Florida Community College at Jacksonville). He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing management at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He is now retired and enjoys living history (18th century reenactment), community service with the West Orange Kiwanis Club, and woodworking. He is currently the secretary of the WO Kiwanis Club and will serve as the President-elect in the coming year. He also is an elder of the Ocoee Christian Church.
